NASA may be focused on hard science, but it’s not against a bit of science fiction. On Tuesday, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center shared their vision for future human space exploration, and it’s inspiring.
The Visions of the Future video shows exotic vacation destinations booked through the fictional travel bureau Exoplanet. “At least as important as rockets and space satellites is the explorer and the inspiration to make the journey”, says NASA Goddard.
Maybe you’ve imagined standing on Mars and watching a rocket launch, but you’ve considered floating on an elevated platform through the clouds of Venus, parachuting into the exoplanet HD 40 307 g of Neptune type or watch the two suns visible from the surface of? NASA has.
The video was inspired by a series of travel posters commissioned by NASA to highlight near and far space destinations, from Mars to the dwarf planet Ceres to exoplanets in other solar systems. These are all real places, although we know more about some of them than others.

NASA Goddard also shared a brief behind-the-scenes look. to the way the video was created using green screens.
We often see conceptual illustrations for distant places like newly discovered exoplanets. This art usually doesn’t involve people in the equation, which is why the travel posters and NASA video are so captivating. Humans may not have passed our own moon yet, but we can imagine a future that extends far beyond.
